Having a good Error 404 page is perhaps as important as having great contents. Sometimes it may not be your fault visitors landed on error pages, but being able to communicate and direct them back to the home page is as good as a second chance to re-engage a visitor. Error 404 page helps you does that.

My 404 page does a half-decent job of trying to figure out where you were going.
For instance http://mikelward.com/sfotware will suggest http://mikelward.com/software.
Failing that, it lists the most popular pages along with a home page link and a search box. For example: http://mikelward.com/badlink
I also think mine’s one of the few that provides a simple explanation of the cause that shouldn’t make people feel like it’s their own fault.
I wish mine was a pretty as some of the others tho. :-)

Sadly, this is just a linkbait, not a real analysis on how to create good error pages. Linkbaiting still seems to work, as one can see on the number of comments.
